Why is the Internet not free?
After all, the infrastructure is already there. Massive fiber-optic cables run across oceans, connecting continents and carrying almost all of the world’s internet traffic. So why isn’t internet access free?
The answer lies in understanding what you’re actually paying for.
The Internet Exists. Accessing It Is a Different Story.
Think of the internet like a network of major highways connecting cities around the world.
The highways already exist, but you still need roads that connect your house to those highways.
In the digital world, those “roads” (fiber cables) are built and maintained by Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
Companies like MTN, Airtel, Glo, MainOne, Spectranet, Starlink, Verizon, Comcast, and many others do far more than simply sell data bundles. They invest heavily in the infrastructure that allows homes, businesses, schools, and offices to connect to the global internet.
Without them, those international cables would be of little use to the average person.
The Undersea Cables Are Not Free
Most people don’t realize that the internet’s global backbone is owned by large telecommunications companies and technology giants.
These submarine fiber-optic cables cost billions of dollars to design, deploy, and maintain.
When a cable is damaged by ship anchors, earthquakes, underwater landslides, or equipment failures, repair operations can cost millions and take weeks to complete.
ISPs don’t own the entire internet. Instead, they pay significant amounts to lease capacity on these international networks.
In simple terms, they are paying for a lane on the digital highway.
Part of your monthly internet bill helps cover those costs.
The Real Cost Is On The Consumer’s End
Interestingly, the most difficult part of internet delivery is often not crossing oceans.
It’s getting the connection from the nearest network point to your home, office, or mobile phone.
This is what telecom engineers call the “last mile.”
For example, when you’re streaming YouTube in Lagos, Abuja, London, or New York, the data may travel thousands of kilometres through high-capacity fiber networks with ease.
The challenge is delivering that connection directly to your device.
That requires:
• Cell towers for mobile networks
• Fiber cables running through streets and estates
• Network switches and routers
• Power systems and backup generators
• Technical support teams
• Field engineers and maintenance crews
• Security and monitoring systems
Every one of these components costs money to build, operate, and maintain.
When a fiber cable gets cut during road construction, someone has to repair it.
When a network tower develops a fault, someone has to fix it.
When heavy rainfall, flooding, or vandalism affects infrastructure, someone has to restore service.
Those costs don’t disappear.
Why Starlink Doesn’t Make Internet Free
A common misconception is that satellite internet eliminates the need for traditional internet providers.
Not exactly.
Take Starlink as an example.
Your data may travel from your phone or router to a satellite in orbit, but the journey doesn’t end there.
The information still needs to reach ground stations connected to terrestrial fiber networks before it can access websites, cloud services, and online platforms.
A simplified version looks like this:
Device → Satellite → Ground Station → Fiber Network → Internet
Even with advanced satellite-to-satellite communication, traffic eventually reaches infrastructure on the ground.
That infrastructure requires land, equipment, engineers, spectrum licenses, maintenance, and continuous investment.
In other words, satellites change how the connection is delivered, but they don’t eliminate the cost of delivering it.
You’re not removing the service provider.
You’re simply choosing a different one.
What You’re Really Paying For
When you buy a monthly data plan or broadband subscription, you’re not paying for “the internet” itself.
You’re paying for:
• Access to international internet networks
• Local transmission infrastructure
• Network maintenance and upgrades
• Customer support services
• Redundancy and backup systems
• Security and traffic management
• Power and operational expenses
The internet may feel invisible, but behind every webpage, video stream, email, and WhatsApp message is a vast physical infrastructure that requires constant investment.
Could Internet Ever Be Free?
In theory, governments could provide internet as a public utility, similar to public roads or street lighting.
However, the infrastructure would still need to be funded through taxes or other public revenue sources.
The cost doesn’t disappear.
It simply shifts from a monthly bill to another funding mechanism.
Someone, somewhere, is always paying for the infrastructure.
The Bigger Question
Instead of asking why internet access isn’t free, a better question might be:
“Who is building, powering, protecting, and maintaining the networks that keep us connected every day?”
The next time your data subscription renews or your broadband bill arrives, remember that you’re not paying for a cable lying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
You’re paying for the complex network that connects your home, office, or smartphone to that global system.
